area as well in the surrounding area.
In the immediate area, you will find the following:
Humber River Golf Course
This nine-hole golf course is located just 7 minutes from Deer Lake
Motel. The layout of this course is a challenge for golfers.
This well groomed course has become a popular distinction for local
people as well as visitors to the area. From the clubhouse you
will have view of the layout of the course. Take the time to
have a conversation with local people and other visitors before and
after your golf game. With it's moderate green fees, you will have a
very enjoyable round of golf.
Strawberry Festival
The Strawberry Festival is held in Deer Lake
on Bowater's Field on the last weekend of July each year. This
fun filled weekend features music, entertainment & activities,
concerts, concession stands, fireworks, etc. Marble Mountain Ski Resort
Marble Mountain Ski Resort is located just
twenty-five minutes from Deer Lake Motel in the Humber Valley. With 32
groomed trails, Marble Mountain is one of the finest ski resorts in
Atlantic Canada. With different degrees of difficulty, Marble Mountain
can be enjoyed by all aspiring skiers. Enjoy the scenic drive through
the Humber Valley and enjoy the view of the valley from the top of
Marble Mountain.
Newfoundland Insectarium
The Newfoundland Insectarium can be reached
just one-half kilometer after taking exit 16, and traveling north
along the Viking Trail, Route 430. On 20 acres of land next to the
magnificent Humber River, displays of living and preserved insects,
Butterfly Pavilion, walking trail, gift shop, 40 seat theatre, viewing
deck and ice cream pallor. A definite must see! Deer Lake Municipal Park (Humber River)
For those who like the outdoors, Deer Lake
Municipal Park is a beautiful place to spend a day at the beach. The
Park features a walking trail, sandy beach and camp sites.
Big Falls Salmon River (Sir Richard Squires Park)
Sir
Richard Squires Park can be reached by traveling Route 430 North and
then taking Highway 422. The park is approximately 36 kilometers
northeast of Deer Lake. The park is situated on the scenic Humber
River and is a popular place for salmon angling. The biggest
attraction is “watching the salmon jump the falls”!! The park also
features camping sites, a picnic area, biking trails, a playground,
boat rentals, a restaurant and lodge.
Funland Resort
A short drive from Deer Lake, on the Viking
Trail, Funland Resort is a great place to have a fun day. The Resort
has a heated pool with 200 foot waterslide, petting farm, mini golf,
restaurant, playground, arcade games room and daily hay rides during
the summer season. Roy Whelan Heritage Museum
Within walking distance of the Motel The Roy
Whelan Heritage Museum gives a fantastic picture of the history of
Deer Lake and the Humber Valley. There are a variety of displays
depicting the daily life of the town’s first settlers, plus other
artifacts and antiques. The building also has a craft shop featuring
a large variety of Newfoundland and Labrador artists' work. Within a very short driving distance, enjoy the following:
Gros Morne National Park
The entrance to Gros Morne National Park is 20
minutes from Deer Lake north on Route 430.
Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has a rich variety
of scenery, wildlife, and recreational activities.
The scenic drive along the south side or the north side of the park
reveals the two distinct landscapes in the area; the coastal lowlands
and the alpine plateau of the Long Range Mountains.
Be on the lookout for one or more of the
239 species of birds in the park or some of the native animals to the
park including Woodland Caribou, Black Bears, Red Fox, Arctic Hare,
Whales, or Harbour Seals or the introduced moose.

The Viking Trail
If you plan to travel the Viking Trail (Route 430),
be prepared to spend a full day. Enjoy this scenic drive north
with the mountains on your right and the ocean on your left.
Besides Gros Morne National Park, traveling further north will bring
you to Port Aux Choix and the site of the Maritime Archaic Indians
Museum. Further North still, you will arrive at Lanse Aux
Meadows, the site of first landing of the Norsemen over 1000 years
ago. Along the way, enjoy your drive through the small fishing
villages.
Blomidon Golf Course
If it's golf you enjoy, besides the Humber River
Golf Course, you may want to take the 30 minute drive to Corner Brook
and play the Blomidon Golf Course. This course features 18 holes and
is very challenging for the average golfer. |
